Live an Interesting Life: Gentleness

Scripture: Ephesians 4:1-6

  • Intimately related to humility (last week’s sermon)
  • Not the same as “niceness”
    • tends to be more siloed
    • “Quietness” confused for gentleness
    • leaves us in our sin, rather than gently admonishing
    • may actually fit with the culture better
  • How important is it to know the difference?
    • One is godly, the other worldly
  • What is “gentleness”?
    • Listed as fruits of the spirit in Galatians, Colossians, &c.
    • Challenges those who would withdraw
    • Gentleness leads, shepherds,¬†but gently in a fashion which invites people to move from death to life
    • Gentleness corrects, restores. ¬†Paul is definite about right and wrong
    • Gentleness cares for others, niceness cares about self
  • Why do we need gentleness?
    • It is who Christ is, and we are in Christ
      • Our God is a god of process, gentleness is how we live as believers
    • It is a means of growth
      • It is a way in which the world sees who God is, so cultivating gentleness is profoundly important
