Advent is a word that means “coming” or “arrival.” It is a four–week  period in which the church remembers the promises of Jesus’ first coming, and looks forward to his promised return. The heart of Advent is to pray for the coming of the Lord. We remember his first coming (he kept his promises to this people in the Old Testament) and we pray that he will remember his promises and come to us again, to rescue the Church from its enemies and to establish his Kingdom for all to see.   Just as John the Baptist told the Jewish people to “prepare” for the Lord’s coming, we need to encourage each other to be ready for his coming again.

The Church has observed a Christmas season since the 4th century. There was always a period of preparation before Christmas Day, which varied from three to seven weeks. The Christian calendar can be a helpful and meaningful tool in your Christian life and the life of your family.        Sometimes, however, well meaning Christians are uneasy with using the calendar. Some mistakenly think that scripture forbids the use of a   Christian calendar. What scripture forbids is any attempt to make the  observance of days (other than the Sabbath) and seasons mandatory. The Christian calendar is a useful tool in the spiritual life and growth of a Christian nothing more nothing less. Remember, we all follow a calendar; the question is: will you follow one created by Hallmark, FTD, and candy companies, or one created by our spiritual ancestors to encourage your  spiritual growth?

It is our prayer that this glorious season will be one of joy, renewal, and hope. Because a virgin conceived, she bore a son, and his name is called  Emmanuel, “God with us!”

Amen & Amen

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel!
